Ever wonder why self storage facilities have auctions instead donating the stuff to a local shelter, selling it on Craigslist or taking it to the dump? The truth is, having a storage auction is our ONLY LEGAL OPTION for clearing a unit that has defaulted or been abandoned. That's right, we are literally left with no other choices and there are a very strict set of legal rules to follow. While the law allows us to auction a unit after 60 days of non-payment, throughout our 30 years in the business of storage we have never once done so that soon. Only after making every effort to contact & settle up with the default customer do we proceed.
Having an auction is not something we ever feel good about and contrary to what's implied on the tv shows, we don't make a boatload of money. In fact, we have never broken even as far as auction income vs. outstanding debt owed to us. Aside from recouping some lost revenue, our other (and probably more important) goal is to make units available for potential paying customers. This benefits us and the community - so when you come to rent a unit you get the size you need rather than having to take what's available.
